Description
Face Work is a duet inspired by language philosophy and the observations on performative behavior of sociologist Erving Goffman. The physicality of the face as a choreographic proposition was a foreign element for me that is proving to be very rich. It is a form of communication that like any language, can be tested and deconstructed to redirect its meaning. Tension can be created from purposeful miscommunication with the face and the idea of sharing and losing face in a social context. The two dancers in Face Work initiate their movement with a single point on the face, such as the lips or the corner of an eye. The movement vocabulary explores how the grotesque inhabits the body without inhibiting connection or understanding. Sometimes the disfiguration is contagious and one dancer transfers her face onto the other. Other times the grotesque moves out of the face and takes control of the body. Throughout the piece, facial expressions are exchanged as if in a tug-of-war, fighting to gain control of both themselves and one another. That conversation is both automatic and carefully guarded. In the piece, as in reality, the work of controlling our self image is a language usually taken for granted. |
